Description
Higher Sutton Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the early to mid-17th century and was remodeled in the mid to late 19th century. It features slatestone rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof adorned with Victorian crested ridge tiles. The building has a projecting rubble front lateral stack, a brick stack at the left gable end, and another at the side of the two-storey porch.
The plan consists of a three-room-and-through-passage layout, with the lower end on the right heated by a fireplace on the front wall, similar to the hall, which includes a two-storey bay at the front. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with five windows, featuring late 19th-century two and four-light casements, except for a later 20th-century two-light window on the first floor of the porch. The ground floor of the gabled two-storey hall bay to the left of centre has paired two-pane sashes. To the left of the hall bay is a 20th-century glazed porch.
To the right of the centre is a very large two-storey (with attic) porch that has a round-headed South Hams type doorway, which contains a six-panel 19th-century door. Adjacent to the porch is a wide projecting lateral stack that has been cut off at the eaves. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but is known to include 17th-century cross beams in the hall, with the possibility of other historical features remaining.
