Description

Ley Farm is a farmhouse that may date back to the 16th century, but most of its features suggest it was built in the 17th century, with additions from the 19th century and modernizations in the 20th century. The structure has rendered cob and stone walls and a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. There are two brick axial stacks. The layout has been somewhat altered but generally consists of three rooms with a through-passage. The left side likely contains the lower room, while the hall is heated by a stack at its inner end. A wing was added to the front of the inner room at some point in the 17th century, and there is an outbuilding extension at the lower end of uncertain date. A 19th-century rear lean-to has been added, along with a 20th-century wing between them.

The exterior is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical front with four windows, which are late 20th-century two-light leaded pane casements. There is a 20th-century plank door at the center, sheltered by a thatched door hood. A small wing projects from the right-hand end. In the apex of the gable-end wall, there is a wood-framed slit opening with a pointed arched head that appears to be from the 16th century.

Inside, there are chamfered ceiling beams in the hall, lower room, and wing. The fireplace in the lower room has been rebuilt, while the hall fireplace has a modern grate. The roof space was not accessible during the survey, but Alcock's Cruck catalogue notes the existence of two jointed cruck trusses that were not seen during the inspection.
