Description

BROADWOODKELLY BROADWOODKELLY SS 60 NW 2/31 The Cottage GV II Small house. Early C16 with C17 alterations. Rendered and plastered cob walls. Gable ended thatched roof. Projecting rendered rubble stack with brick shaft at each end. Plan: 2 room plan each room heated by end stack. The right-hand end at least was originally open to the roof with a central hearth. The roofspace of the left-hand end is inaccessible. Fireplaces and ceilings inserted in early C17. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front - the 2 right-hand ground floor windows are C20 2-light small-paned casements. The 2 left-hand ones are similar but probably C19 3-light C19 casement on 1st floor. Central C20 glazed door behind contemporary open-fronted porch. C19 outshot at rear. Interior: Right-hand room has heavy but roughly-finished cross beam. Left-hand room has longitudual beam with deep chamfer. Original roof survives with 2 pairs of face-pegged jointed crucks. The right-hand one has a morticed slightly cranked collar and triangular strengthening block in apex and mortices for threaded purlins. It is lightly smoke-blackened. The left- hand truss cannot be seen in the roof space because of a full height partition.
