Description

The Cottage is a small house dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century. It features rendered and plastered cob walls and a gable-ended thatched roof. The building has a projecting rendered rubble stack with brick shafts at both ends. The layout consists of a two-room plan, with each room heated by an end stack. The right-hand room was originally open to the roof and has a central hearth, while the roof space of the left-hand room is inaccessible. Fireplaces and ceilings were added in the early 17th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front. The two right-hand ground floor windows are 20th-century two-light small-paned casements, while the two left-hand windows are similar but likely 19th-century three-light casements on the first floor. There is a central 20th-century glazed door behind a contemporary open-fronted porch, and a 19th-century outshot at the rear.

Inside, the right-hand room features a heavy but roughly-finished cross beam, while the left-hand room has a longitudinal beam with a deep chamfer. The original roof remains intact, supported by two pairs of face-pegged jointed crucks. The right-hand cruck has a morticed, slightly cranked collar and a triangular strengthening block at the apex, along with mortices for threaded purlins, and is lightly smoke-blackened. The left-hand truss is not visible in the roof space due to a full-height partition.
