Description

Eworthy Cottage is a small house dating from around the mid 17th century. It features rendered cob walls and a thatched roof, which is half-hipped to the left and hipped to the right. The building has one central axial rubble stack. The layout consists of a two-room plan: a larger heated kitchen/living room on the left with an axial fireplace, and a smaller unheated service room on the right, which likely had a fireplace added in the 18th century. The current position of the stairs beside the stack may be the original location.

The cottage is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has one window. On the first floor, towards the right end, there is a two-light casement window, probably from the late 18th century, set in a very small opening. On the ground floor to the left, there is a late 20th-century two-light casement window with glazing bars, and below the first-floor window is a 20th-century plank door. The left gable end features two 20th-century casements on the first floor.

Inside, the roof trusses, likely from the 19th century, have straight principals with lapped and pegged collars, crossed at the apex. The fireplace in the main left-hand room has a chamfered wooden lintel with straight cut stops and an oven at the rear. This room also has one chamfered cross beam with no discernible stops, and its joists are chamfered, some showing traces of ogee stops. The right-hand room has closely spaced, roughly chamfered beams, and its fireplace has a replaced wooden lintel and has been reduced in size, with an oven on the right side. Eworthy Cottage is an interesting example of a small but well-constructed 17th-century house that has retained much of its traditional exterior and fabric.
