Description
The Germansweek War Memorial is a granite obelisk located within a railed enclosure outside the Parish Hall, opposite Bidlake Cottage. This tapered, rough-hewn obelisk has a square base and is topped with a pyramidal capstone, standing on a granite base. It is set on a concrete platform that can be accessed from the road via a front gate.
The main dedicatory inscription on the north-east face of the obelisk states: "IN COMMEMORATION OF PEACE 1919, THIS PLOT OF LAND WAS ENCLOSED AS A PLEASURE GROUND AND ALSO THIS MEMORIAL ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS IN PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO SERVED THEIR KING AND COUNTRY DURING THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918."
The names of those commemorated begin on the north-west face, listing "KILLED (3 NAMES), DIED (2 NAMES), PRISONER OF WAR AT KUT (1 NAME), SERVED (3 NAMES)" and continue around the other faces. All inscriptions are made with applied metal letters.
