Description

Middle West Week is a house dating from the early to mid 18th century, with the west end remodeled likely in the late 19th century. It is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings, whitewashed and plastered at the front, topped with a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. The building features a large projecting stone stack with set-offs and a cob chimney shaft at the right end, along with a rendered cob axial stack.

The original layout was probably single depth and two rooms wide, with a two-storey farm building attached to the left (west) end. It is likely that only the higher end room was heated, serving as a hall or kitchen. A rear right outshut, which does not appear to be original, was probably added in the 19th century when the axial stack may have been inserted. The roof has been raised, and the left-hand end has been converted to provide additional accommodation, resulting in a three-room plan.

The house is two storeys tall with an asymmetrical four-window front. The front door is located on the right side, providing direct access to the right-hand room, while there is an additional entrance into the left-hand room. The ground floor windows are 20th-century casements with two and three lights, while the three right-hand first floor windows are a mix of 20th-century and 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The left first floor window is a three-light casement with six panes per light. The projecting stack at the right end includes a semi-circular bread oven with a slate top.

Inside, there is a large fireplace at the right end featuring stone rubble jambs and a plain timber lintel, with exposed joists of slender scantling. The roof space has not been inspected. Middle West Week is marked on a map from 1760.
