Description
The Padbury War Memorial is located at the junction of Main Street and Old End, near several other Grade II-listed buildings such as Ivy Farmhouse, Vine Cottage, 7 and 8 Old End, and Everley. This memorial features a tapering, rough-hewn granite obelisk that is square in shape and approximately 2 meters high. It stands on a square plinth that is raised on one step.
The centers of all four sides of the plinth have been inset and smoothed, with each face displaying names or dedications in applied black-painted metal letters. The main dedication on the north-west face reads: "ERECTED BY PUBLIC/ SUBSCRIPTION IN MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO DIED IN DEFENCE OF/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY./ 1914 - 1918." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the south-east face, listed in order of rank along with initials and surnames.
The north-east face features the biblical quotation: "THEREFORE SHALL THEY/ RECEIVE A GLORIOUS/ KINGDOM AND A BEAUTIFUL/ CROWN FROM THE LORD'S/ HAND," while the south-west face bears the inscription: "THINE, O LORD, IS THE/ GREATNESS, AND THE/ POWER, AND THE GLORY,/ AND THE VICTORY."
The memorial is surrounded by iron railings that create a small square enclosure.
