Description

Forge Cottage is a small house dating from the early 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features rendered cob walls and a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. The building has two brick stacks: one axial and one at the right gable end. Originally, the plan consisted of two rooms, with a larger room on the right heated by the axial stack and a small unheated room to the left. The main room was likely subdivided in the early 20th century into two smaller rooms and an entrance lobby at the front.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has one window on the upper floor and two windows on the ground floor. A 20th-century plank door is located to the right, sheltered by a thatched door hood. There is a 19th-century lean-to at the right-hand end of the building.

Inside, the main room features a very large open fireplace that nearly spans the width of the room, complete with a roughly chamfered wooden lintel and a granite jamb on the left. Against the rear wall of this room is a bench with a post at the left end, which is moulded at the top, likely a feature from the 17th century. The roof includes one side-pegged jointed cruck visible on the first floor, and beside the stack, there is a principal rafter with a curved foot. Access to the roof space is not available, so any evidence of smoke-blackening on the timbers cannot be observed.
