Description

Part of Harvey's is a pair of cottages located in Sampford Courtenay, dating from the early 17th century, possibly with earlier origins. The cottages have rendered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof. There is a 20th-century rebuilt axial brick stack offset from the ridge, along with a projecting rubble stack at the left gable end featuring a brick shaft. Originally, the cottages likely followed a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end to the left and a hall heated by the axial stack backing onto the passage. Currently, the structure is divided into two cottages, with the front passage door blocked. A rear wing, added behind the right-hand end, probably dates from the 18th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front, featuring windows on the ground floor. The thatch roof extends in a pentice over the left-hand side, supported by brackets. The windows are 20th-century small-paned casements, and No. 1 has a 20th-century plank door to the left of centre. The entrance to No. 2 is through a door in a 20th-century lean-to at the right-hand end. There is a long wing behind the right-hand end. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but is likely to contain early features such as open fireplaces, ceiling beams, and possibly medieval or 17th-century roof trusses.
