Description
This small outbuilding, located 5 metres northeast of West Castick Farmhouse, is likely from the late 16th or early 17th century. Originally a house, it is now used as pig houses and a store. The building is constructed of stone rubble and has a rag slate roof with gable ends. It features a one-room plan with an entrance on the gable end, and both floors were originally heated by end stacks.
There is an extension at the rear, likely added in the 19th century, with part of it rebuilt in the 20th century for use as pig houses. The original purpose of the building is unclear, but it likely served as a service room due to its proximity to the farmhouse. The exterior is two storeys high with a loft, featuring a plank door on the ground floor and a slit opening for loft ventilation. The left side has external stone steps leading to the first-floor entrance, which partially obscures an earlier opening for a mullion window, although a small 17th-century granite window frame remains. Inside, there are heavy, roughly cut, slightly chamfered floor joists, a granite-surround fireplace on the ground floor, and two 17th-century granite jambs for a fireplace on the first floor that have been reset. The roof structure is only partially visible, showing halved, lap-jointed, and pegged apices and collars.
