Description

NORTH HILL SX 27 NE 4/116 Small outbuilding 5 metres to north east of West Castick Farmhouse GV II Small house, now used as pigs-houses and store. Probably late C16 or early C17. Stone rubble. Rag slate roof with gable ends. Plan: One room plan building with entrance in gable end. Ground and first floor originally heated by end stacks. The house has been extended to rear, possibly in the C19, the extension part rebuilt in the C20 and used as pigs-houses. The original function is uncertain and whilst this building stands only about 5 metres to the south west of the farmhouse (qv), and was probably used as a service room, it has the remains of fairly high quality features. Exterior: Two storeys and loft. Plank door on ground floor and slit opening ventilating loft. The left hand side elevation has external stone steps leading up to the entrance on first floor. These steps partly obscure the earlier opening for a mullion window (the granite window surround removed). Further small C17 granite window frame surviving. From the interior at least one timber mullion window with slight diagonally set mullions is visible. Interior: Heavy roughly cut slightly chamfered floor joists. Granite surround fireplace on ground floor and the two C17 granite jambs to the fireplace on the first floor have been reset in the house. Roof structure only partly visible; halved, lap-jointed and pegged apices and collars.
