Description

This building is an outbuilding that includes a bakehouse and adjoining pigstys, located immediately southeast and south of Welcombe Barton. The bakehouse dates from the 17th century, while the pigstys were built around the early 19th century.

The bakehouse is constructed of stone rubble and features a roof that has been lowered to a monopitch, which is now clad in corrugated asbestos. It has a rectangular single-cell plan with a large fireplace and oven at the west end, and a doorway at the center of the north front. Originally, it was likely a single-storey structure. There is now an additional doorway in the rear south wall, and the east end is open.

On the exterior, the north front has a central doorway with a rough timber lintel and a relieving arch, although the door itself is missing. Above the doorway, there is a row of 14 pigeon holes, some of which have slate ledges. At the northeast corner, where the bakehouse adjoins the barn, there is projecting masonry resembling a diagonal buttress.

Inside, the large open fireplace at the west end has dressed stone jambs and a chamfered timber lintel with straight cut stops. The oven, which is clay lined, has an arched opening and projects from the side of the stack inside the building.

The pigstys are a long, narrow rectangular range to the west of the bakehouse, also built of stone rubble, with a slate gable-ended roof featuring ridge tiles, one of which is an early crested ridge-tile. There are feeding hatches on the north side facing the south end of the house. The interiors of the pigstys were not inspected but are said to be used as an office.
