Description
Old Barn is a house that was used as an outbuilding from 1846 until the 1980s, when it was reconverted back into a house. It likely has origins dating back to the early 18th century. The building features stone rubble up to the first floor level, with colourwashed rendered cob above, while the right end remains unrendered stone rubble. The roof is thatched, hipped at the right end and gabled at the left end. There is a brick chimney at the left end and a 20th-century brick lateral chimney at the right front. The exposed brick quoins are visible in the render.
The house has a single depth plan, which probably originally consisted of two rooms and a through passage, with a later barn and loft above adjoining at the right end. It is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical two-window front, featuring an off-centre thatched porch supported by long timber brackets, with the higher end slightly advanced. There are two small square timber windows on the ground floor and two similar windows on the first floor, one located at the lower end.
Inside, the 1980s renovations include painted brick partition walls. The first-floor rooms retain a collar rafter roof, with collars halved and pegged into the principals, and a 1980s roof above. The left first-floor room has a fireplace with a fireplace beam, and the former loft entrance is retained at the rear, featuring a late 20th-century timber balcony.
