Description

West Castick Farmhouse likely originated in the 17th century, with alterations circa the mid-18th century and an extension circa the 1850s. It is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof, featuring gable ends. The rear has lateral stacks, with brick shafts.

The house has an overall “L” shaped plan, with an earlier range on the right and a circa mid-19th century cross wing to the left. The right-hand range contains the entrance, which opens into a remodelled stair hall. Beyond this is a large room, likely a former hall, heated by a rear lateral stack, and a smaller inner room also heated by a rear lateral stack. This inner room may be a circa late 17th or early 18th century addition. The left wing is a circa mid-19th century cross wing of a two-room plan, with a large principal room facing the front, heated by a side lateral stack. This cross wing may be a remodelling or stand on the site of an earlier structure.

The two-story front elevation has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows – a 1:2:1 pattern – with the entrance slightly left of centre and the gable end of the cross wing projecting forward on the left. A circa 18th century six-panel door, set within a renewed 20th century open porch with round columns, provides access. There are two circa 18th century two-light casements to the right, originally lighting what is now the kitchen. Above these are two circa 18th century three-light casements. Set slightly back and with a straight joint on the front elevation is the entrance to the putative inner room. The cross wing features a circa 19th century double six-over-nine pane sash window on the ground floor and a tripartite sash window above. The rear elevation lacks a straight joint between the putative hall and inner room.

The interior features a circa mid-19th century stair hall with a staircase. The hall to the right is particularly large, incorporating a granite flag and slate floor (now partially covered). The fireplace appears massive, though partly blocked. Other features include circa 18th century two-panel doors and a plaster ceiling. A small room has been partitioned off, with a feeding hatch leading to what was likely a sick room, according to information from the tenant. The inner room has a partly blocked fireplace. Within the cross wing, ceilings are higher, and a 20th century grate incorporates circa 17th century granite jambs salvaged from a small outbuilding. The first floor and roof structure were not inspected.

A late 16th century granite winder stair stands detached in the garden to the right of the house.
