Description

NORTH HILL SX 27 NE 4/115 West Castick Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse. Probably C17 origins, altered in circa mid C18 and extended in circa 1850s. Stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends. Stone rubble rear lateral stacks with brick shafts. Plan: Original arrangement uncertain. The house has an overall 'L' shaped plan with earlier range to right containing the entrance which leads into a remodelled later C19 stair hall, large room, probably the hall, heated by a rear lateral stack and smaller probably inner room beyond to right heated by a rear lateral stack. It is possible that this inner room may be a circa late C17 or early C18 addition. To left of the entrance is a circa mid C19 cross wing of 2-room plan with large principal room on front heated by a side lateral stack. It is possible that this cross wing is either a remodelling or on the site of an earlier range. Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 1:2:1 window front with entrance to left of centre and gable end of cross wing projecting forward on left. Circa C18 6-panel door with raised and fielded panels in open porch, the round columns renewed in the C20. Two C18 2-light casements to right lighting putative hall, now the kitchen and two corca C18 3-light casements directly above. To right, set slightly back with a straight joint on the front elevation is the entrance into the putative inner room. To left, the cross wing has a double C19 6 over 9 pane sash on ground floor and C19 tripartite sash on first. On the rear elevation there is no straight joint between the putative hall and inner room. Interior: Hide entrance hall with circa mid C19 stair. The hall to right is particularly large. The floor is partly of granite flags and partly slate (now covered over). The fireplace is partly blocked but appears massive. C18 2-panel doors and plaster ceiling. On the left hand side of the fireplace a small room has been partitioned off and there is a feeding hatch to enable food to be passed into what was probably a sick room (information from tenant). The inner room has a partly blocked fireplace. In the cross wing the ceilings are considerably higher and there is a C20 grate to the principal fireplace reusing circa C17 granite jambs taken from the small outbuilding to north east (q.v.). First floor and roof structure not inspected. There is a late C16 granite winder stair which stands now detached in the garden to the right of the house. Latham, B.
