Quay And Adjoining Waterfront Walling

The quay and adjoining waterfront walling in Manaccan dates from the 18th century. It is made of vertically set dry shale rubble, with some granite copings, and features slightly battered walls and dressed granite steps. The design includes a waterfront revetment wall with a triangular quay that projects to the northwest, along with a rounded spur extending west from its outer corner. There is a flight of steps at each angle of the sheltered west side, and the walls extend along the shoreline for a considerable distance on either side of the main quay. This quay was built using a construction method believed to have been introduced from the Low Countries in the 17th century. Despite being weathered, it remains in remarkable condition.
