Description

Mimosa Cottage is a small house, likely dating from the 18th century, though it may be even earlier, with an extension probably added in the late 18th century. It is built of painted rubble and cob walls, topped with a thatched roof. The left-hand side of the roof is hipped, while a brick chimney rises from the gable end on the right, and a lower hipped roof section adjoins the gable end. The house has a 2-room plan, with the left-hand room built into a hillside, and a single-storey building, possibly originally a fish cellar, attached at a lower ground level on the right. The upper floor rooms are partly within the roof space.

The south front has a slightly irregular 2-window arrangement. A central doorway contains a 20th-century glazed door. Around the late 18th and early 19th centuries, 12-pane horizontal sliding sash windows were installed on the ground floor. Later, 2-light casements were placed in presumably enlarged and closer-spaced first-floor window openings. A doorway is located to the left of the single-storey section, which has an old 3-light casement window at its right-hand end, and a 20th-century roof dormer above. The interior has not been inspected.

The cottage is one of a group of thatched buildings located in Helford.
