Description
Point Cottage and the garden wall to the east date from the early 19th century. The house features stucco on the front over a granite ashlar plinth, with painted rubble on the sides and rear. It has a half-hipped scantle slate roof with brick chimneys on the side walls and over a cross wall towards the right. The building has a double depth plan, consisting of a two-room-wide house with a central cross passage that leads to a central stair between rear service rooms on the left and an integral or possibly slightly later one-room-wide servant's cottage on the right, which has a wing at right angles to the rear. The house is two storeys tall with an overall five-window east front that includes a plinth, a first-floor string, and paired brackets supporting a fascia board. The windows are set beneath shallow arches, with a symmetrical three-window arrangement for the house on the left and a two-window arrangement for the cottage on the right. The house features a round-arched central doorway with the original six-panel door and fanlight, along with original twelve-pane hornless sashes in most openings, although some have horned replacements. The interior has not been inspected but is said to contain much original detail. The garden wall on the left side has ramped scantle slate and clay ridge tile coping, returning at right angles to either side to a low granite ashlar wall, which originally had iron railings. This is the only house in Helford with a strong classical influence, while others in the area are mostly stone and cob, thatched or formerly thatched. The property is situated on a prominent spur overlooking the mouth of the creek.
