Description
The Shipwright’s Arms is a public house, likely dating from the 18th century and extended in the 19th century. It is constructed of painted rubble and cob walls, with slate sills, chamfered wooden lintels, and a wheat reed thatched roof with brick chimneys on the gable ends. The building has an L-shaped plan, resulting from a 19th-century extension to the left of the original two-room house, and further remodelling occurred in the 20th century. The original east front was probably symmetrical with three windows and a central doorway. A 19th-century service wing over a basement was added to the front, altering the left-hand ground floor window to create two doorways. The main doorway was changed to a window, and a new doorway was placed in the gable end to the right, likely at the same time. Ground floor windows are 12-pane casements with internal shutters. First floor windows are circa late 18th and early 19th century 12-pane horizontal sliding sash windows. A 20th-century canopy is located below sill level. The interior has been remodelled into a single room and retains moulded ceiling beams, and probably contains the original roof structure. A cobbled forecourt is present. The public house is part of a group of thatched houses in Helford.
