Description
Spindrift House is a house dating from around the mid-19th century, with a service range on the right (east) that may be older. The front is finished in stucco, and it features a hipped scantle slate roof, although the front has concrete tiles. There are brick chimneys on the left end wall and over the cross wall towards the right, along with cast iron ogee gutters. The layout includes three reception rooms in the main house, which is partly double depth, and three additional rooms in the wing that is set back on the right. The main part has a larger entrance and stair hall situated between the left-hand room and the next room, with a basement kitchen located behind the rooms on the right.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a regular four-window south front. The doorway is located beneath the second first-floor window from the left, featuring a panelled door with sidelights and an overlight. The windows are late 19th-century four-pane horned sashes. A nine-bay cast-iron verandah runs along the front, while the rear has an original tall 32-pane stair sash.
Inside, the house boasts a fine stair hall and reception rooms with impressive plaster ceilings. The open-well open-string stair is adorned with moulded stick balusters and a mahogany handrail that is wreathed over the newel. All ceilings feature egg and dart cornices over bead and reel, but the details in the ceiling bands vary: the left-hand room has a trailing rose, the second room has trailing fruit, and the right-hand room features acanthus detail.
