Description
Evelyn Cottages is a row of four cottages, likely built in the 18th century. They are constructed of stucco over granite rubble, featuring slate sills and a grouted scantle slate roof with gable ends. A brick chimney is located over the cross party wall to the left of the middle, with additional chimneys over the left party gable and just behind the right gable end. Some cast-iron ogee gutters are present.
The cottages are arranged in a plan of four one-room units, with the left pair having a through passage, known locally as an ope, and the right pair being wider with two cross-passages in the middle. It is possible that both pairs were originally designed as two-room houses that were later subdivided, with the passage of the left-hand house becoming an ope to the row of houses (Phillips Court) that runs at right angles behind the left-hand rooms. The ground slopes down on the right side and at the rear.
The exterior is two storeys high, with an overall five-window front: the left side has a two-window front, while the right side has a three-window front, both of which are slightly irregular. The left pair features late 19th or 20th century four-pane hornless sash windows on the ground floor and early 19th century wider 16-pane sashes on the first floor. The right-hand house has late 19th century six-pane horned sashes and 19th century four-panel doors, with the top panels later glazed. The interior has not been inspected.
