Description

Brockhal Lodge is a house dating to circa 1835, which was remodelled and extended in the mid to late 19th century and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of stuccoed stone, with slate hipped roofs. The main central block features an embattled parapet and cornice, with side chimney stacks concealed within the battlements.

The original house has a double-depth square plan, initially containing two principal rooms and a veranda on the south front, with smaller service rooms at the rear. The entrance at first opened onto an axial passage leading to a stairhall; however, in the 19th century, a partition was removed to create a large entrance hall. A two-storey wing was added to the right-hand side, originally intended as a billiard room, but now serving as the drawing room. A single-storey service wing was built on the left side, later raised to two storeys in the 20th century, with a conservatory added in the angle. A porch was constructed in the late 20th century in the angle between the wing and the main block.

The south front has a 1:2:2 window arrangement. The central two-window section represents the original house, with an embattled parapet and cornice, and pilasters. It features 12-pane sashes on the first floor (the right-hand window having been restored) and large sashes with margin panes and low sills on the ground floor. A rebuilt veranda with a tented corrugated iron roof on timber posts runs across the ground floor of the original house. A flat-roofed dormer has been added in the 20th century. The right-hand return features a 19th-century sash with glazing bars on the first floor, above a 19th-century panelled door with a rectangular overlight, and a large, late 20th-century glazed porch. To the right is a late 19th-century two-storey wing with two windows, 12-pane sashes, and a string course. Set back on the left is the single-storey service wing, raised to two storeys in the 20th century, with a 20th-century conservatory in the angle.

Inside, the principal rooms have moulded plaster cornices. The stairhall and the hall (adjacent to the right-hand room of the main block) have modillioned cornices. The stairhall features an open well staircase with moulded balusters, an ornate cast-iron newel, and a moulded mahogany handrail. A circa mid-19th-century marble chimneypiece with console brackets and a cast-iron grate is present in the front left-hand room, while the front right-hand room features a wooden chimneypiece with console brackets. The drawing room has a later 19th-century moulded plaster ceiling and a 20th-century carved wooden chimneypiece. Most of the 19th-century joinery remains, including that on the first floor.
