Description

A row of three cottages, likely originating as a single house, was extended and divided into cottages. The structure probably dates to the 17th century, with substantial remodelling and extension in the 18th or early 19th century, and further extensions to the rear in the late 19th century. The cottages are built with a rendered exterior over stone rubble or cob, and feature a thatched roof with a gabled end to the left and a half-hipped end to the right. The rear wing has a slate roof with a gable end. There are two rendered axial stacks and a rendered gable end stack to the left. The axial stack to the right of centre is original, showing weathering, and has been heightened in brick. Originally, the layout comprised a long range with three cottages, each likely initially of a single-room plan with a doorway to the right. Seaview Cottage (the central one) and The Nook (the right-hand one) probably represent the original house, with a central axial stack. Fairholme, the cottage on the right, is a later 18th or 19th century extension created when the building was converted into three cottages. Fairholme was itself extended at the rear with a two-storey, gable-ended wing in the late 19th century. The front elevation presents an asymmetrical 3-window façade, with 19th century 16-pane 2-light casement windows, except for a 20th century replacement window on the ground floor left (Fairholme) lacking glazing bars. Each cottage has a doorway to the right; Fairholme and The Nook have late 19th-century moulded and panelled doors, and Seaview Cottage has a 20th-century plank door. The rear elevation was not inspected, but a two-storey, gable-ended wing is situated behind Fairholme. The interior was inaccessible during the survey in 1988.
