Description

No. 78 on Lower Market Street is a town house that dates back to the 17th century, with a refronting that likely occurred in the 18th or early 19th century. The building features a painted rubble front and a steep dry slate roof, along with brick stacks at the ends. An original rubble stack at the rear wing was removed around 1980. The house has a deep L-shaped plan that includes a rear wing. The front range consists of two rooms: a heated hall/kitchen on the left and an originally unheated service room. It is two storeys high and has a two-window range, with 20th-century four-pane horned sash windows. The doorway, located to the right of the middle, has a 20th-century partly-glazed door.

Inside, the structure has been significantly altered since around 1980, but it still retains some floor and roof elements from the 18th or early 19th century. During renovation work, two 17th-century two-light mullioned windows were uncovered, which had been plastered over. One window features an ovolo-moulded design next to the chimney breast in the rear wing, while the other is a leaded glazed window with an original lozenge-paned fixed light and a later 17th or 18th-century opening casement with rectangular panes, located at the rear of the right-hand chamber on the first floor. The glazed window is now housed in the Penryn Museum.
