Description

No.10 Cross Street is a town house dating from the 17th or early 18th century, with later remodeling occurring in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The front facade is painted rubble, while the rear features Elvan ashlar with rusticated granite quoins and dressings, including a triangular pediment with an oculus above Venetian windows on both the ground and first floors. The roof is steeply pitched, with a hipped wing; it is covered with asbestos slate behind the front parapet, and grouted scantle slate elsewhere. Dressed granite and brick stacks are present.

The house has an L-shaped plan and two stories with a three-window front. Early 19th-century twelve-pane hornless sash windows are located to the left and right, while a two-story bowed bay, featuring a moulded cornice and a 30-pane window above a 40-pane window (including sidelights), is centrally placed. To the right is a pilastered doorway, possibly of the 18th century, with a moulded entablature, a triangular pediment with a dentilled cornice, and a flush-beaded six-panel door within similar reveals.

The rear wing’s elevation retains original or early 19th-century sash windows in its Venetian windows, with the exception of the first-floor central window light, which has a later 19th-century Y-traceried sash. The interior is reportedly characterized by high-quality 18th-century features.
