Description

The Old Mill is a corn mill that later became part of a clothing factory, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed of roughly coursed granite rubble and features a rag slate roof with corrugated iron at the rear. The roof is half-hipped on the left side and gabled on the right. The building has two storeys and a one-window range. There are granite lintels above a through-passage doorway on the right, a 20th-century door in the center, and an 8/8-pane sash window on the left. Above the eaves, there is a similar sash window, as well as another similar sash window at the rear. The left return wall displays a cast-iron breast-shot wheel made by Dingry Foundry of Truro, featuring wooden spokes and paddles. Inside, there is a complete set of machinery that includes a Hurst frame, gearing for mill stones in an octagonal frame, and a hopper. The Old Mill is part of a group of mills located along the Kennet valley.
