Description
The gate piers and flanking walls at the entrance to the former Kennal Vale Gunpowder Works date from the late 19th century. They are constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings. The wide gateway features piers and terminal piers that are integrated with the flanking walls. These piers rise above the walls and have ramped pyramidal caps, while the walls slope down on either side of the terminal piers. The gateway is partly blocked.
Historically, Kennal Vale is known for being an exceptionally well-preserved gunpowder works that opened in 1812 and was extended in 1844. The house located inside the gateway is depicted on maps from 1840, suggesting that this entrance likely dates from the opening of the upper works in 1844.
