Description
This building is a stable located about 35 metres west of Lancarffe, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with few later alterations. It is constructed of coursed slatestone rubble and features a hipped slate roof with crested ridge tiles. The stable has a rectangular plan with a central entrance and an integral outshut at the rear. Attached to the left side is a short range of 19th-century stables, which have been largely rebuilt in the 20th century.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front on a plinth, featuring a central pedimental gable. The ground floor includes a central granite doorway with a segmental arch, and to the right and left are chamfered granite windows with casements at both the ground and first floors. The first floor has a central loading door and a 9-panelled studded 19th-century door in a granite surround. The granite doorframes and mullion windows may have been reused. The right side of the building has a blocked door, while the left side features a skewed doorway that is concealed by the single-storey addition. The rear has two 20th-century windows in the outshut and a central blocked doorway.
Inside, the stable no longer has any stalls remaining on the ground floor. Above, there is a loft with a seven-bay roof, where the principal rafters are halved and pegged at the apex. The collars are chambered and chamfered, also halved and pegged to the principals, with trenched purlins.
