Description
The milestone on Racecourse Downs, located 100 meters east of Norton Cottage, is a stone structure likely dating from the early 18th century. It is rectangular with a cambered head and stands approximately 1 meter high. The milestone is painted white and features the inscription "2/B," with the lettering highlighted in black paint.
Historically, the lane where this milestone is situated was once the main route between Bodmin and West Cornwall, serving as a post route from 1677 to 1722. Although the exact date of the milestone is unconfirmed, it is believed to have been erected during this period, potentially predating the 1769 Act of Parliament that established the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, which mandated the installation of milestones and direction posts along the road. This route was later replaced by a more direct path over Tregoss Moor and was no longer a turnpike route by 1786. The milestone is also marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1880.
The milestone is designated for its intact condition and original location, as well as its group value with other listed milestones along the turnpike route.
