Description

CARDINHAM

1557/0/10008 A30 01-OCT-10 Milestone at Blisland Junction

GV II A milestone, dating from c1769, in stone. The milestone is rectangular with a cambered head, and stands approximately 1m high. The milestone is inscribed with seriphs: Blisland/2/B/3; the lettering is picked out in black paint.

HISTORY The milestone stands at a junction on the former main route between Bodmin and Launceston. The 1769 Act of Parliament that set up the Bodmin Turnpike Trust (9 Geo III, c. 59 (local and personal)) required milestones and direction posts to be erected along the road. The milestone is of a standard shape commonly employed by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust at that time. The route was later improved to avoid the steep gradient out of Bodmin at Castle Street, and a later triangular three-mile stone can be found about half a mile away on the re-aligned section. The earlier milestone survived in situ and is marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1880.

REASONS FOR DESIGNATION: The milestone at Blisland Junction, is recommended for listing at Grade II, for the following principal reasons: * An intact milestone dating from the C18, which remains in its original position. * Group value with the other listed milestones along the turnpike route.
