Description

Praze Farmhouse is probably of early 17th-century origin, with additions from the 18th century and alterations in the 20th. It is constructed of slatestone and granite rubble, with a bitumenised slate roof, ridge tiles, and gable ends. A gable end stack remains, with a brick shaft.

The farmhouse originally had a three-room and through-passage plan; the lower end room to the right was heated by a gable end stack. The passage contained a through passage, with a rear doorway later concealed within an outshut. The room to the left of the passage may have been an unheated central room. Around the 18th century, a single-storey outshut was added to the rear of the building, behind the hall, passage, and lower end room, with a stack on the left side. Around the 19th century, the hall was partitioned to create a rear lateral corridor. The position of the staircase is unclear. The higher end room was substantially rebuilt, and its original gable end stack was removed.

The front of the farmhouse is asymmetrical with a four-window facade. A 20th-century porch is situated in front of the passage doorway, containing a 20th-century outer door and a 19th-century panelled and glazed inner door with overlight. A 20th-century two-light casement window is above the door. The lower end to the right features a 19th-century 16-pane sash window with a granite lintel on the ground floor, with a four-pane light above. The hall has a three-light granite window with chamfered mullions and a 20th-century three-light casement above. The higher end has a wide two-light chamfered granite window with a chamfered mullion, combined with 20th-century two-light casements, and a 20th-century three-light casement above. The right end is blind, with a corrugated iron lean-to. The left end has been rebuilt with a 20th-century buttress and a 20th-century window at first floor.

The rear outshut has a stable door and two 20th-century two-light casements. The lower end has a 20th-century window on the ground floor and a 19th-century 16-pane sash window at the first floor. The higher end has a small granite window with a chamfered mullion at the first floor, with a 20th-century casement inserted. The interior of the farmhouse was inaccessible at the time of the survey.
