Description
The gateway in the garden to the west of Trewardale dates from 1680, as indicated by the datestone. It was built for William and Honour Browne. The structure is made of granite and features a round-headed arch with a hollow chamfer, along with ball and run-out stops. The initials WB and HB, representing William and Honour Browne, are displayed in the spandrels. Above the arch, there is a later urn. The gateway is flanked by two large piers made of dressed granite, which are topped with granite curved necks and ball finials. The datestone from 1680 is located on the piers. To the right, there is a curved stone rubble garden wall. This gateway is positioned to the west of Trewardale, which was rebuilt by the Robyn family in the 17th century and later by the Brownes, who acquired the property in the late 17th century. The existing house was completed in 1763 and underwent further alterations afterward. The gateway incorporates materials from the 17th-century construction of the house.
