Description

Racecourse Farmhouse is an inn that has been converted into a farmhouse, built in the early 19th century with few later alterations. The building features rendered stone rubble that is lined out at the front, with painted stone dressings. It has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, along with gable end stacks that have rendered shafts and diagonally set brick chimneys.

The farmhouse has a double depth plan, with principal rooms of equal size on the front left and right, each heated by a gable end stack. There is a central stair hall at the rear and shallow service rooms. An attached stable is located on the right side of the farmhouse.

The exterior is two storeys high and has three windows, presenting a symmetrical front with early 19th-century 16-pane sash windows. The central entrance features a panelled and glazed 19th-century door with a flat hood supported by slender granite columns with moulded caps, and it is adorned with a scrolled dentil cornice. The building has a plinth and rusticated pilasters.

On the right side, the attached two-storey stable has a hipped roof and features a central door with windows on either side, including a splayed stone head to the left. There are also two shuttered loading doors on the first floor and an additional single bay with a door added to the right. The left side of the house has a 4-pane sash window on the first floor to the left.

At the rear, there are 20th-century windows on the first floor, with a central 19th-century 12-pane sash window lighting the stair. The ground floor has a central plank door, a 4-pane sash window to the left, and a 2-light casement window to the right. The rear of the stable features external granite steps leading to a loft door, along with a rubble lean-to on the inner side that has a 2-light casement window and a door.

Inside, the entrance hall contains 6-panelled doors on both the right and left. The rear stair hall has a dog-leg stair with stick balusters and a scrolled string. The room on the front left includes niches on either side of the fireplace, which has moulded ogee arches and a 20th-century fireplace. Dado rails and panelled shutters are present on the front windows.

The Racecourse Inn was originally built to serve the racing events held on Racecourse Downs to the north.
