Description
The milestone located 150 meters southwest of Clerkenwater House dates from around 1769 and is made of stone, likely granite, and is currently painted. It has a rectangular shape with a cambered head and stands approximately 0.5 meters high. The milestone features inscriptions in capital letters reading "B/1," with the lettering highlighted in black paint. Additionally, there is a metal pin at the top of the stone next to an inscribed benchmark.
Historically, this milestone is situated on the former turnpike road that connected Bodmin and Helland Bridge. The 1769 Act of Parliament established the Bodmin Turnpike Trust, which mandated the installation of milestones and direction posts along the road. This particular milestone was part of the route from Bodmin to Helland Bridge. Records indicate that while most toll gates operated by the Trust generated significant income in the early 19th century, the Clerkenwater Gate on the Hellandbridge Road yielded only twenty to thirty pounds annually. Nevertheless, the road remained under the Trust's management. This milestone is one of only three that were erected along this three-mile stretch of rural road.
The milestone's design is typical of those used by the Bodmin Turnpike Trust during that period and is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1880.
