Description

A pair of lodges and boundary walls, dating from 1892, forming part of a former naval officers' quarters complex. The buildings are constructed from squared local rubble, with granite quoins, surrounds, and a parapet string. They have hipped roofs covered in Delabole slate, with granite ashlar stacks. The lodges are set around a carriage gateway. They are built on double-depth plans, the left-hand lodge featuring a rear wing at a right angle. The lodges are two storeys high, with an overall five-window frontage. The left-hand lodge has three first-floor windows: paired sashes flanked by a single sash. The other lodge has two paired first-floor sashes, and single sashes to the ground floor. All windows are original four-pane, horned sashes. Each lodge has a doorway approximately central to the windows, with overlights and panelled, glazed doors. The parapet continues over the central, segmental-arched carriageway, with a recessed rectangular panel above. The interiors were not inspected. Tall stone rubble boundary walls, part of the prison complex, are attached to the east corner and enclose a yard curving to meet the Chaplaincy building on the north-east corner of the site. The complex is included for group value.
