Description

The building comprises former houses for the prison governor and chaplain, constructed in the late 1850s. It is built of local rubble walls with dressed granite quoins, featuring chamfered surrounds to openings, a square eaves cornice, and stepped gable copings. The steeply pitched roofs are covered with Delabole slate, with some areas bitumen-grouted. Two gabled dormers are present, along with dressed granite axial and end stacks. The design is of a simple Baronial style, arranged as a semi-detached pair beneath two parallel roofs.

The garden front is two storeys plus an attic over a basement, with a regular 8-window range. Original hornless sash windows are found throughout, with the Chaplain’s House on the right featuring taller ground-floor sashes with round-arched lights. Other original windows include two similar windows at the far left and two modified windows with arched lights, with later windows filling the remaining spaces. The entrance front is arranged over a 6-window range, with mirror-image fronts, each containing an approximately central doorway with over-light and a six-panel door. Original 3-light hornless sashes are present, with consoles between doorways; those to the ground floor have round-arched lights, while other windows are narrower. A cast-iron open porch with two segmental-arched bays is positioned in front of the Governor’s House. The interior was not inspected.

Subsidiary features include basement forecourt walls topped with wrought-iron railings.
