Description
55 and 55A Wendron Street are two town houses built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from local Elvan rubble with granite dressings. No. 55, on the right, features additional dressings as stretchers linking the jambstones and as lintel courses. The houses have an asbestos slate roof with a tall moulded fascia board and brick end stacks. They have a double-depth plan with a rear wing to No. 55 and rise to three storeys, presenting an overall three-window range.
No. 55 has a two-window range, with an original 8-pane sash window on the second floor to the left; the other windows are horned copies with glazing bars. The doorway is located on the right and has an arcaded overlight. No. 55A has a one-window range, featuring an original 12-pane hornless sash window above an original canted oriel with a 16-pane central sash, flanked by 4-pane sidelights and a moulded cornice. Below this, there is a 4-pane hornless sash, which may be original but has had its glazing bars removed. The second-floor windows are square. Both houses have panelled doors; No. 55 has a 5-panel door within a moulded architrave with corner blocks and roundels, while No. 55A has a similar door but with the two top panels replaced by one glazed panel. The interiors have not been inspected but are likely to be of interest.
