Description

The Methodist Church in St Mawes is a non-conformist chapel built in the early to mid 19th century. It features a stucco exterior over rubble with a dry slate roof that is hipped to the right, adjoining the wall of a house at a higher level on the left. The roof is adorned with open chevron crested ridge tiles and a finial over the hip. The building has a rectangular plan with a pair of aisles and a gallery on three sides, standing two storeys tall, including the gallery.

The southeast street front has three windows, with 20th-century cross windows on both the ground and first floors set in the original openings. These windows have stucco consoles beneath the sills and moulded stucco architraves. The façade features a plinth, a wide mid-floor band, a cornice under a plain parapet, and rusticated quoins. The entrance on the right side consists of a pair of doorways flanked by a window with a moulded architrave.

Inside, the church remains unaltered, showcasing a flat plaster ceiling with an acanthus moulded rose and moulded ribs. The interior includes pitch pine pews, an original rostrum accessed by a pair of flanking quadrant stairs with open strings and turned balusters. The communion rail is U-shaped with similar balusters, and there is a throne with cabriole legs. The gallery is supported by plain pillars, with the front featuring paired, pierced, cast iron panels between pilasters.
