Description

Pilchards Smugglers Corner is a house that dates from the 17th century, with later extensions in the 17th and early 18th centuries, and was remodeled to divide into four cottages, likely in the mid-19th century. The building features painted slatestone rubble walls and mostly has asbestos slate roofs, with original stone gable stacks on both sides and at the gable ends of the wings, as well as a rear lateral stack. The scantle slate roof is half-hipped to the north and includes raking roof dormers. The right rear wing, known as No 3 Church Hill, retains a 16-pane, 2-light casement window from the 18th century. Originally designed with a three-room, through passage plan, the layout has become an irregular U shape with two rear wings. The house is two storeys high and has an irregular five-window south front featuring 12-pane horned sash windows. There are doorways with boarded doors at the ground floor openings numbered 2 and 4, and cambered brick arches above the ground floor windows. The Pilchards loft includes 20th-century louvered shutters. Inside Pilchards, there is an original ovolo moulded and stopped oak lintel above a splayed fireplace in the left room, while the lateral hearth has a replaced lintel. Other interiors and roofs have not been inspected.
