Description
A house, likely dating from the 17th century, and now divided into two cottages, is located in Goodleigh. The building is constructed of whitewashed rendered rubble and cob, with an asbestos slate roof featuring gable ends. Two rubble chimney stacks are present at the rear, with slate weatherings and brick shafts. Originally designed with a three-cell through-passage plan, the house has been divided into two cottages along the right side of the original passage.
The front has a four-window arrangement of two-light casement windows. Three of these are 20th century replacements, while one, located to the right, dates to the 19th century with two panes per light. A 19th century three-light casement window with six panes per light is positioned to the left of a three-panelled door leading to the through-passage, the upper panels of which are glazed. A rear through-passage door from the 18th century has four sections, moulded cover strips, and raking pieces to the heads that form pointed arches, along with L-shaped hinges. A two-light hall window with six panes per light and an overlight is also present. The upper end of the house, which is partially recessed, likely resulted from some rebuilding and incorporates a 19th-century nine-paned fixed light to the left of a plank door accessed by five slate-capped stone steps. A corrugated iron roof covers the rear outshut.
The roof structure mainly consists of 20th-century replacement rafters, although one original truss, featuring a pegged collar, remains in place. A single beam with run-out stops is visible in the hall.
