Description

The house at Braecotte likely dates to the 17th century or possibly earlier, although it has been significantly altered and re-roofed in the 20th century. It is constructed of whitewashed roughcast rendered rubble and cob with an asbestos slate roof. A lateral stack with offsets and a brick shaft is visible at the front lower end of the house, and an inserted brick axial stack is also present. The original layout of the house is now unclear due to the subdivision of rooms and the later use of the upper end as a carpenter’s shop. In 1985, the house comprised a wide through-passage containing stairs, which heated a lower room, and two rooms with a garage attached at the upper end. The house is two stories high and features 20th-century windows. A doorway is sheltered by a shallow slate canopy extending from the left side of the stack. The building is listed for its group value.
