Shippon Adjoining Piggery At Approx. 10M North West Of Carminowe Farmhouse

The building is a shippon, dating from around 1860, located approximately 10 meters northwest of Carminowe Farmhouse. It is constructed from shale rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, and incorporates some reused dressed medieval and 17th-century stonework from the former Carminowe Manor complex. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate and the structure adjoins a barn on the left, with a gable end on the right.

The shippon has a rectangular plan and features three entrances on the front, providing access to the barn on the left and an entrance in the right-hand gable for access from the farmhouse without entering the farmyard. It likely has mangers at the rear and a drain along the front (south) behind the standings. The building is a single storey, with the south front showcasing a central doorway, doorways at either end, and slit ventilators positioned midway between them. The original ledged doors are located on the right and left, while the central doorway is partly blocked and fitted with a reused seven-pane window. The ventilation slits are trefoil-headed and reused.

On the right-hand (east) gable end, there is a doorway on the left and a window on the right. The reused wide, nearly round-headed chamfered doorway, which has diagonal stops, is likely from the 17th century and is fitted with an original circa 1860 V-jointed ledged door featuring an ornate iron handle and internal hinges. The reused straight chamfered two-light mullioned window with intermediate bars is also probably from the 17th century, while the trefoil-headed ventilation slit above it is likely earlier and reused. The rear of the building has not been inspected but presumably contains some window openings.

Carminowe was an important manor from the 17th century. The shippon is part of a planned group of farm buildings and remains virtually complete as originally built, enhanced by the interest of the reused stone fragments.
