Description
This building is a shippon located directly north of Carr Farmhouse, dating back to 1622, as indicated by the inscription "IC 1622" on the door lintel. It is constructed of squared rubble with a graduated stone slate roof and features a two-unit, two-storey plan with a gable entrance and a projecting plinth. There are two three-light double-chamfered mullion windows on each floor, although most of the mullions have been removed. The ground floor windows have hoodmoulds. A timber lean-to addition is present against the right gable, and there is a gable chimney stack. The rear of the building has blocked two and four-light windows, along with a large 20th-century opening.
Inside, the shippon has chamfered floor beams, a chamfered bressumer beam, and a square post supporting an inglenook fireplace, all featuring run-out stops. A 18th-century fireplace has been inserted within the inglenook, which retains a small recessed cupboard. There is also a remnant of a wattle and daub smoke hood above the hearth. Paired doors with heavy timber frames, now blocked, previously provided access to other rooms.
