Description
The Castle is a farmhouse, now a house, likely dating from the late 17th century, although the porch lintel is marked "IT 1715". It is built of hammer-dressed stone with a graduated stone slate roof and features a three-unit plan with two storeys. The building has a projecting plinth, quoins, and a continuous dripmould. A single-storey porch located between the second and third bays has a moulded surround, an obtuse-angled lintel with recessed spandrels, and a gable. Each bay contains a five-light double-chamfered mullion window on both floors, except for the house-part window, which has six lights, and there is a small single light above the porch that dates from the 20th century. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there are two rendered ridge chimney stacks. In the 20th century, three-light windows were inserted into each gable end, with the right gable also featuring a 20th-century bow window. The rear includes a single-storey lean-to addition, a 20th-century extension to the right, and a small 20th-century wing with a lintel dated "IT 1710" that was removed from the old shippon. The rear windows consist of two 2-light windows (one a fire window) that are partly obscured by the lean-to addition, and two 3-light windows with double-chamfered mullions. Inside, there are chamfered floor beams with stepped or run-out stops. A staircase has replaced an inglenook fireplace, but two small wall cupboards remain, one featuring an oak door with butterfly hinges. The first-floor fireplace has a chamfered surround and an obtuse-angled lintel with recessed spandrels.
