Description

Rough Bank Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating to 1607, as indicated by the date on the door lintel. It is constructed of squared rubble stone with a slate roof. The original layout comprised three units, arranged over two storeys. The farmhouse features quoins. A gabled porch, situated between the second and third bays, has a chamfered door surround with an elliptical head and a dated lintel. The inner door is of heavy timber and has an ogee-arched lintel. The windows are double-chamfered and cavetto-moulded, with three lights on the ground floor and three to four lights on the first floor, all with hoodmoulds, except for one mullion which is missing. A small stair window is also present. Coped gables with kneelers are topped by ridge and gable chimney stacks, with diagonally set shafts projecting from the left gable. A window from the 19th century is found on the right return. The rear elevation features a two-light fire window, a four-light window to the house part, and three smaller openings. Inside, chamfered floor beams are present with stepped stops to the ends. A chamfered bressumer beam and a spire post have ogee stops. Two small wall cupboards remain within the ingle nook, which also includes a fire window and a timber heck. Two boarded doors with pegged ledges and ogee-arched lintels provide access to a heated parlour and a buttery/pantry, from which steps lead down to a vaulted cellar of a later date. The roof is of the through-purlin type, with collar and tie-beam trusses. One original door remains on the first floor. Early outbuildings are attached to the left gable end and an early wall surrounds the front enclosure. The farmhouse is a well-preserved example of a Yeoman farmer's house.
