Description

The building is a shippon located approximately 7 metres north-east of East Coombe Farmhouse, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with possibly earlier origins. It features parts made of coursed blocks of granite ashlar, mostly granite stone rubble, and some cob on the tops of the walls. The roof is covered with corrugated iron, which was formerly thatch.

The shippon is built into a hillside, facing north, and has a plan that includes a hayloft. The north side has a doorway at the left (east) end with a 19th-century stable-type door. To the right of this doorway is a slit window, and at the right end, there is an inserted feeding hatch, both of which are behind a secondary lean-to structure. Originally constructed as a pigsty, the building has been converted into an implement store by blocking the front doorways and creating an opening at the left end.

The main roof is gable-ended, with the left gable end uphill, featuring a hayloft loading hatch for easy access from the terrace. The right gable end has a central 20th-century casement window inserted into the former dung hatch, flanked by slit windows, and another slit window in the gable for the hayloft. Below, there are three blocked drain holes that used to empty into a granite-lined leat nearby. The interior includes 17th-century plain carpentry details, featuring a three-bay roof supported by A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
