Description

Studio Cottage is a cottage from the early to mid-19th century, with a possibly earlier core. It is constructed of granite stone rubble with dressed quoins, brick stacks, and a thatched roof. The cottage has a two-room layout facing east. The larger room on the right (northern side) features a corner stack and contains the stairs, while the left room, which serves as the kitchen, is located behind an entrance lobby and has an axial stack that backs onto the stairs. There is a tradition that this cottage was converted from 17th-century stables belonging to the adjacent Court Cottage, which is located at the southern end of the house.

The cottage is two storeys high and has a balanced but not symmetrical three-window front. The central ground floor window and all three first-floor windows are original casements with pointed heads and Y tracery glazing bars, featuring diamond panes of leaded glass and narrow margin panes. The three-light casement on the ground floor to the right and the doorway with a side light on the ground floor to the left are 20th-century replacements. A slate monopitch hood supported by plain timber brackets extends across the front from the left end to the central window, which appears to block a former doorway. The roof adjoins Court Cottage on the left and is half-hipped on the right. The interior has plain 19th-century joinery details, with no structural carpentry exposed, and the roof has not been inspected. Studio Cottage is part of the attractive and varied group of listed buildings that make up the hamlet of Thorn.
