Description

No. 9 is a mid-18th century town house located on New Street in Penryn. It is constructed from coursed faced rubble and features flat keyed granite arches, topped by a steep dry slate roof with brick end stacks. The building has a shallow double-depth plan and stands two storeys over a basement, with a symmetrical three-window front. The windows are 20th-century replicas of 16-pane hornless sashes. The central doorway is triangular pedimented and eared, flanked by consoles, with panelled reveals and a six-panel door, accessed by a flight of granite steps. The basement includes 12-pane, two-light windows and a low doorway at the far right with an original stuck beaded frame and a 20th-century door. The rear features small window openings with 20th-century replica windows, including a 16-pane stair sash in the weatherboarded central bay, and an original ledged door.

Inside, there is an 18th-century open-well closed-string staircase with column-turned balusters and moulded pendants, along with two-panel doors, a dresser in the left-hand room of the basement, and an original pegged roof structure. The property also has wrought-iron railings on a granite plinth. No. 9 is part of a well-preserved row of houses that step down the hill on New Street.
