Description

The Island Cafe is a former laundry for St Michael's Mount, now operating as a cafe. It dates from around the 1870s and was slightly extended later. The building is constructed of granite rubble with granite and brick dressings, topped with asbestos slate roofs and featuring brick chimneys at the gable ends and over two cross walls.

The overall layout is an irregular T-shape, originally designed in an L-shape, consisting of a pair of double-depth plan laundry keepers' cottages on the right and the former laundry on the left, which has two large front doorways. There is a wing at right angles behind and a late 19th-century addition on the far left.

The structure is two storeys high with a fairly regular seven-window north front. It features a machicolated eaves cornice that is interrupted by gabled roof dormers containing 12-pane sash windows. The gables are finished with shaped slates. The ground floor openings are topped with segmental brick arches, and the two doorways in the second and third bays from the left form a two-bay arcade supported by chamfered responds and a central pier with corbelled imposts and a capital. The former cottages on the right have a symmetrical ground floor layout with a central doorway flanked by two 12-pane hopper windows, and a similar window is found in the late 19th-century addition on the far left. Prominent cast-iron gutters, rainwater heads, and branching downpipes direct water from the eaves between the dormers to two mid-floor horizontal pipes leading to two downpipes. The interior has not been inspected.
