Description

This is a mid-19th century terrace of three small houses located on Church Street, Helston. The houses are built of local rubble stone with granite dressings, and have shallow, keyed brick arches. The first floor of number 25 is stuccoed, although the ground floor has been rendered in the 20th century following the removal of a shop front. The roofs are covered in scantle slate, with the roof of number 23 being slurried. The houses have brick end stacks and follow a double-depth plan.

The terrace is two storeys high, with a four-window arrangement. Number 23 retains its original 16-pane hornless sash windows. Number 25 has mid-to-late 19th century four-pane hornless sashes on the first floor; it’s possible these are original sashes with some glazing bars removed, with later horned sashes elsewhere. All three houses have four doorways with panelled doors, most of which are partly glazed, and include overlights. The right-hand door of number 25 retains its original six-panel door with a patterned overlight inscribed "Trethowan." Numbers 23 and 25 were originally designed as a mirror-image pair, but number 25 has an additional doorway from a former shop. Number 21 has a doorway on its right-hand side. The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace is included on the list for its contribution to the group value of the surrounding buildings.
