Description
A terrace of three houses at 24, 25 and 26 Adelaide Street, Plymouth, built in the mid-19th century to designs by John Foulston. The houses are constructed of stucco with asbestos slate roofs featuring projecting eaves and a simple entablature. No. 25 retains its original dentil cornice. There are three roof dormers, and rendered end stacks to the left-hand side of number 24 and number 25.
The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan and each is two storeys high, with a two-window front. Original twelve-pane hornless sash windows have been replaced with horned copies to number 25 and to the ground floor of number 26; four-pane horned sashes are found at number 24. Later 20th-century windows are present on the upper floors of number 26. Pilasters flank each front, although the corner pilaster on the right-hand side lacks a moulded capital. A mid-floor band sits above the ground floor level. Numbers 24 and 25 feature pilastered doorways with moulded hoods resting on consoles, along with overlights and panelled doors. Number 26's doorway is located on a pilastered two-window return.
The interior was not inspected but likely retains original features. This terrace represents a rare survival of a planned grouping by Foulston, demonstrating a simpler style of his work compared to other examples around the Hooe.
