Description
This is an officer's house, dating from the middle of the 19th century, and originally part of the Royal Naval Hospital at Stonehouse, Plymouth. Constructed of Plymouth limestone with limestone dressings, including rusticated quoins, the building features an asbestos slate roof hidden behind a moulded stone parapet with modillions. Stone copings are present to the pedimented ends, also with modillions, and panelled stone stacks with moulded cornices project from the right side and rear. The house has a single-depth plan with service rooms at the rear. The symmetrical three-window front includes a plinth and a mid-floor string. It contains four-pane horned sash windows, with moulded hoods supported on consoles over the ground-floor windows; the central ground-floor window is blind. The interior has not been inspected. A rear courtyard wall with a door is also part of the property. Originally, this house accommodated the officers of the subaltern guard of the Royal Marines, stationed near the former south gate to prevent desertions. The building is included on the list because of its historical significance and its contribution to the outstanding and complete military hospital complex.
